What to Expect After Wisdom Teeth Removal

What to Expect After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Your First 24 Hours

The first day after wisdom teeth removal is typically the most intense part of recovery. Gauze will be placed over the extraction sites before you leave the office — bite down gently and change it as directed to help control bleeding. Some oozing is normal for the first several hours and does not indicate a problem. You may feel groggy if sedation was used, so plan to rest at home with a responsible adult nearby for the remainder of the day.

Swelling usually begins to develop within a few hours of surgery and is a normal part of the healing process. Applying an ice pack to the outside of your face in 20-minute intervals during the first 24 hours can help manage it. Swelling typically peaks around day two or three before gradually improving.

Managing Discomfort During Recovery

Some degree of soreness and discomfort is a normal and expected part of healing after wisdom teeth removal. Your surgeon will provide specific instructions for managing it, which may include prescription medication, over-the-counter options, or both. Take medication as directed and stay ahead of discomfort by following the recommended schedule rather than waiting until it becomes difficult to manage.

Avoid using straws, spitting forcefully, or smoking during the first several days, as these actions can dislodge the blood clot forming at the extraction site. If this clot is disturbed, it can lead to a condition called dry socket, which causes increased discomfort and delays healing.

What to Eat and Drink

Soft foods are your best option for the first several days following surgery. Good choices include yogurt, mashed potatoes, eggs, smoothies, applesauce, and soup broth. Avoid crunchy, chewy, or hard foods until your surgeon clears you to return to a normal diet. Staying hydrated is important — drink plenty of water, but avoid carbonated beverages and alcohol while you are healing.

Cold foods such as yogurt or ice cream can be soothing during the first day or two. Avoid very hot foods and beverages, which can increase bleeding and slow clot formation.

Days Two Through Seven

Swelling and stiffness in the jaw are common through the middle of the first week and are a normal part of the body’s healing response. Bruising may also appear along the jaw or neck — this is not unusual and will fade over time. Most patients begin to feel noticeably more comfortable by day three or four, though individual recovery timelines vary depending on the complexity of the extractions.

Keep the extraction sites clean by gently rinsing with warm salt water as directed, typically beginning the day after surgery. Avoid brushing directly over the surgical sites until they have had time to begin closing.

When to Call the Office

Most wisdom tooth recoveries progress without complications, but knowing what to watch for is important. Contact Cherry Orchard Oral & Implant Surgery if you experience increasing rather than improving discomfort after the first few days, fever, excessive bleeding that does not respond to gentle pressure, or significant swelling that worsens rather than improves beyond day three.

Getting Back to Normal

Many patients return to light activity and work within a few days, though more physically demanding activities should be avoided for at least a week to avoid disrupting healing. Your surgeon will provide specific guidance based on how your procedure went and how you are recovering.
